Codas · seven closes

A close is a question about the ask.

The opening is chosen by the material; the close is chosen by what the page is actually asking for. Most pages reach for a heading and a button because that is the shape they remember — four of the seven below are not that shape, and one asks for nothing at all.

Two laws suspended, on purpose

Seven codas, where a page has one; and a gate specimen that is a specimen, not this page's climax. Both are the cost of a catalog.

Choosing one

What is the page asking for?

CTA/FormCodaAAtelier editorialCODA

Form coda

Ported from the Alpar Industry contact close. No endpoint has been supplied here, so the submit stays disabled and a Probel says why — which is the behaviour, not a bug in the specimen.

radius 0 · hairline edges · mono uppercase controls · 96rem shell

Coda · the ask is a task

Ready to describe the problem?

One or two sentences on what happens after they send it — who reads it and what comes back.

One contractor · from survey to signed handover

Tell us what you are trying to do. A paragraph is enough.

No submit endpoint supplied — the control stays disabled until one is.

Form codaground · band

Character
Practical, unhurried — the ask is a described task, not a click.
Use when
The conversion is “describe your problem”, a person writes the reply, and the reassurance line names something true about how that works. Shipped original: the Alpar Industry contact close.
Avoid
More fields than the ask deserves; a second control beside the submit; a submit endpoint you have not been given — declare it instead.
Seam
The form’s own top rule opens it; only the foot follows.
Supercharge
With no endpoint the control stays disabled and a Probel says why — a form that swallows a submission is worse than no form.
Portability
System-bound; the caption, labels and reassurance line are topic-bound.
CTA/BasicDarkFChromeCODA (gate)

Dark CTA

The chrome gate close. On a real page this is the fortissimo and there is exactly one of it, about two thirds through.

Rendered live

The close, on the dark plane

The gate is the climax — one per page, about two-thirds through. Restate the offer in one line and give one control.

Proof chip · one line
Primary action

Dark CTAgate plate on ground

Character
Resolved, weighty.
Use when
Pages with no other gate moment; a proof chip and one control.
Avoid
Combining with a dark testimonial on the same page.
Seam
The plate is its own plane; ground above and below.
Supercharge
Veil the figure if one is used; keep the h2 under 8 words.
Portability
Topic-free.
CTA/BasicLightFChromeCODA

Light CTA

The same geometry one step down in pressure, for a page whose climax already happened.

Rendered live

The close, on the light plane

A quieter coda for pages that already had their climax. Same geometry as the dark one, one step less pressure.

Primary action

Light CTAground (panel plate)

Character
Quiet close.
Use when
Pages that already had their gate moment.
Avoid
Two controls of equal weight; long lead.
Seam
Last movement before the foot.
Supercharge
Rating in mono; one control.
Portability
Topic-free.
CTA/LedgerCodaAAtelier editorialCODA + LEDGER

Ledger coda

Closes on the figures the page already proved. The rail's dashed borders are its own seam, so the foot may follow directly.

Ledger codaground · band · gate

Character
Summary in the evidence register — closes on numbers, not adjectives.
Use when
The argument was quantitative and the reader has just seen these figures in context, so restating them reads as a summary.
Avoid
Numbers the page has not earned; more than four; a second control; pairing it with a LedgerHero on the same page.
Seam
The rail’s dashed borders are the seam both sides — no rule needed, and the foot can follow directly.
Supercharge
Three cells, not four: a coda rail is a reminder, not a dashboard.
Portability
System-bound; every value is topic-bound and must already appear above.
CTA/NextCodaAAtelier editorialCODA (sequence)

Next coda

The only close that may sit on a page which already spent its gate: it asks for attention, not conversion.

Rendered live

Next codaground · band

Character
Forward-leaning, editorial — the ask is attention, not conversion.
Use when
A real next page exists and there is a reason a reader would want it. The only coda that may sit on a page which already spent its gate.
Avoid
Using it as a related-links row (that is navigation); a forward link that is really the same page; more than one of each direction.
Seam
Its own rule opens it; the hairline under the link closes it.
Supercharge
The note says why this follows, not what it contains.
Portability
Fully portable; the destination is topic-bound.
CTA/SignatureCodaAAtelier editorialCODA (quiet)

Signature coda

No control at all. On a page with no other ask this is a page that never asked — which is sometimes the correct decision and never an accident.

Rendered live

A close without a control is a position, not an oversight.

No. 06 — Signaturecolophon

Signature codaground · band · gate

Character
A colophon — one line, a mono pair, no control at all.
Use when
An essay, a manifesto, a method page: the ask happened earlier or was never made, and the line is a position rather than a summary.
Avoid
On a page that still needs a conversion — a coda with no control on a page with no other ask is a page that never asked; a paragraph where a sentence belongs.
Seam
Rule above, foot below; nothing else may follow it.
Supercharge
Keep the line under 34ch so the last thing on the page does not fill its width.
Portability
Fully portable; the line is topic-bound.
landing/LandingFootAAtelier editorialchrome

Landing foot

Not a coda — the colophon that follows whichever one you chose. Columns render only when filled.

Rendered live

Dictionary

The foot is not the close. It is what comes after the close.

Landing footband

Character
Colophon, quiet.
Use when
Wordmark, one line, up to two columns, a legal line.
Avoid
Social icon rows; more than two columns; a newsletter form.
Seam
Hairline above; last thing on the page.
Supercharge
Keep the legal line in mono uppercase; let columns render only when they have entries.
Portability
Topic-free.

Seven ways to stop. The wrong one is the one chosen by habit.
