Spend the loud thing once
A mesh plane, a lit gate, a gradient word, a giant numeral: each is a treatment, and a page that uses two has used none. This page spends the mesh on the overture and nothing else claims that register.
Bold · one treatment, spent
Every instrument on this page is one the system already had. Nothing was added to make it shout — the loud ones were simply spent early, once each, and then left alone.
Eight movements · one display moment · one gate · one treatment · zero raw colour values
The unexpected slot
One oversized mark, read as an image rather than a heading.
The cadence allows exactly one second display-scale hit per page, inside a passage. Used as a heading it would be a second h1 moment; used as a figure it is a breath.
The argument
01
A mesh plane, a lit gate, a gradient word, a giant numeral: each is a treatment, and a page that uses two has used none. This page spends the mesh on the overture and nothing else claims that register.
02
One display moment at the top, movements opening at h2, and a single unexpected hit in the passage — an oversized numeral read as an image, not as a heading.
03
The gate is the loudest thing here and it is simply a plane change. Nothing on it is larger than what came before; it is darker, and that is the whole effect.
The budget
| register | instrument | spent | where |
|---|---|---|---|
| Treatment | mesh plane | once | the overture |
| Display | type-giant | once | the passage |
| Gradient | type-gradient | one word | the coda |
| Diffusion | orb | one | behind the gate |
| Plane change | ground · band · gate | four | every seam |
| Field | atelier-grain | page-wide | under the whisper budget, so not a treatment |
Budget — this pageone per register
The loudest thing on a page should be the cheapest.
A dark plane costs one class. It survives dark mode because the gate is the darkest plane in both, so the step is real either way. Everything else a page might reach for to make this moment — a bigger heading, a second colour, a heavier texture — costs more and reads as less.
